Your files stay yours.

Filetale is designed to organize files privately on your Mac. We do not operate an account system, advertising network, analytics service or cloud file-processing service for Filetale.

Data Filetale processes

When you use Filetale, the app may process:

  • filenames, local paths, sizes, dates and file type information;
  • text embedded in supported documents;
  • text recognized on device from supported images and scanned PDF pages;
  • locally generated categories, tags, summaries and exact-file hashes;
  • source website and page context made available by macOS or the Filetale Safari extension;
  • security-scoped bookmarks for folders you explicitly choose; and
  • App Store purchase entitlement information supplied by StoreKit.

This information remains in Filetale’s sandbox, its private Spotlight index and the shared App Group used by the contained Safari extension.

Safari extension

The Safari extension identifies likely download actions. Depending on the website permission you grant in Safari, it may capture a page URL, page title, target link, suggested filename, link label, timestamp and a confidence signal.

URL usernames, passwords, the entire query string—including query-based signed tokens—fragments and blob identifiers are removed before data is saved. URL paths are retained because they help identify the source page or target file. Avoid granting website access on a site whose paths contain information you do not want stored locally.

Website access is optional and controlled in Safari Settings. Private Browsing capture is off by default. The extension does not contain advertising, analytics, cross-promotion or purchase code.

Safari does not expose every completed download to extensions. Filetale treats extension events as hints and correlates them with stable local files. Unmatched hints expire after 24 hours or are removed earlier when the bounded local queue reaches its limit.

Sharing and collection

Filetale does not transmit your files, extracted text, hashes, categories, search queries or browsing context to us or to an AI service. Apple may process purchase and App Store operational data under Apple’s own policies.

Storage and deletion

Catalog data stays on your Mac until you remove it, reset the app or uninstall Filetale. When you choose Forget & Ignore, Filetale removes searchable text, source context, tags, summaries, hashes and its Spotlight entry. It retains only the local path and file identity required to honor your request not to index that file again. Resetting ignored files allows Filetale to analyze those files again.

The Erase Filetale Data action removes the local catalog, derived metadata, private Spotlight entries, chosen-folder bookmarks and the native Safari handoff queue. Context still waiting in Safari’s own fallback storage can be removed with Clear Captured Context in the Filetale Safari extension. These actions do not remove website permissions, and they never delete original files.

Filetale never deletes the original file when you remove a catalog item.

Folder access

Filetale reads your Downloads folder and folders you explicitly choose. Access is sandboxed and read-only in version 1.0.

Children

Filetale is a general-audience productivity app and does not knowingly collect personal information from children.

Changes

If this policy changes, the effective date above will be updated. A change to on-device-only processing would be disclosed before release.
